I painted this portrait of my wife, Maïa d’Aboville, in 2014 as a birthday gift during our last years in Paris, while I was a resident artist at Le 100ecs. Our life was already leaning toward change, just before the move to Lyon and the beginning of Taverne Gutenberg, and everything around us felt fast. What I wanted to keep here was the opposite: the softness of sleep, the kind of stillness that protects love when life is about to turn.
