Gauguin

I painted Gauguin with mixed feelings, because his work carries both wonder and discomfort for me. I wanted the canvas to hold the tropical shock of discovery and those surges of color, while never looking away from the darker truth of his behavior toward women. That tension is the real subject here, and I let it stay unresolved inside the composition.
