About this work
With iPhone Lady, which received the Monaco Prize for Telecom, I took Fragonard’s La Liseuse and replaced the book with an iPhone because that small screen now holds so much of our attention and light. Painting her on African wax fabric mattered to me just as much, since the material carries its own history of colonization, trade, and identity. I wanted the surface to stay bright and restless, somewhere between an Impressionist shimmer and the harder pulse of contemporary life.
